A woman accused him of raping her by luring her with a job offer

The officer-in-charge (OC) of Paltan police station has been suspended, allegedly for raping a woman by luring her with a job offer.

In an order from the police headquarters, OC Md Mahmudul Haque has been suspended, confirmed Sohel Rana, assistant inspector general (AIG) (media) at the police headquarters, on Monday.

“A departmental case has also been lodged against him in this regard,” AIG Rana added.

The action has been taken against the police official following a complaint submitted by the victim with the police headquarters.

The complaint was received on August 1, and the headquarters assigned Monalisa Begum, additional deputy commissioner (Motijheel division) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), to investigate the matter.

In the written complaint, the woman, a resident of Naogaon, said she met Mahmudul while studying at a college in the district.

They talked over mobile phone often, and met each other whenever the police official went to Naogaon.

“Mahmudul called me over mobile phone to come to Dhaka on September 21, 2017 assuring me of a job,” the victim said in her complaint.

The complaint also added that the police official took her to a residential hotel, where he mixed sedatives with her food, and then raped her after she lost consciousness.

"Afterwards I questioned him why he did such a thing with me, he said he loved me, and promised to marry me,” it said.

Despite already being a married person, OC Mahmudul swore that he would marry the victim by touching the holy Quran, the complaint said.

The police official continued physical relationship with her for a long time, and then forced her to get an abortion after she became pregnant in 2018.

Mahmudul stopped contacting her since April 2 this year, the complaint added.

The complaint states, having failed to contact Mahmudul, the woman informed his father about the incidents, who initially acknowledged the matter. However, both of them, later on, threatened the woman and her family, and asked her not to disturb Mahmudul.

The victim also attempted to commit suicide on April 12, it added.
