The DSCC mayor has said a zero-tolerance policy has been adopted against all who will be found involved with the casino business

Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Mayor Sayeed Khokon has said he is not embarrassed at finding out that a DSCC councillor has been accused of involvement in the casino business.

The mayor thanked Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for the ongoing crackdown against illegal casinos and gambling dens.

"There is no question of being embarrassed," the mayor said while replying to reporters' queries at the end of a meeting held at the Nagar Bhaban in Dhaka on Tuesday.

The meeting was held to discuss steps to stop the plying of illegal vehicles in Dhaka, occupation of streets by hawkers, and other issues.

"We will take strict action against the accused," he said.

If a councillor is involved, then law enforcers will take necessary steps as per the law, Khokon said. "As an elected mayor, I will extend my support and help to the law enforcement agencies."

He said: "In the course of the ongoing crackdown on casinos, the controversial activities of the councillors have come to light. But the law enforcement agencies will take action at their own pace. No law will be violated.

"A zero-tolerance policy has been adopted, as per the directive of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, and this policy will continue," Khokon said.

DSCC ward councilor and Jubo League leader AKM Mominul Haque Sayeed has been accused of casino business, extortion and tendering. The DSCC had informed the airport authorities that the councilor could not travel without permission.

In this regard, Sayeed Khokon said: "One of our councilors was absent at regular board meetings, violating rules. So we requested the local government ministry to take necessary action against him."

Besides, he also traveled abroad without permission. "We sent a letter to the airport authorities informing them of his activities so that he would not be able to leave the country with acquiring permission."

Among others, representatives of various organizations including the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Md Shafiqul Islam, Rajdhani Unnayan Kartipakkha (Rajuk) Chairman  Sultan Ahmed were present in the meeting.
