We suspected the club has casino in it, but that was somehow removed before the drive, RAB said
Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) have detained Kalabagan Krira Chakra Club President Shafiqul Alam Firoz before raiding the club in search of a potential illegal casino.
However, they found no casino in the sports organization.
RAB also detained four others in the drive.
The elite force started the drive sometime after 7pm on Friday that ended around 7:40pm.
"We suspected that the club had a casino in it, but was somehow shifted before the drive," RAB-2 Commanding Officer Ashique Billah told reporters at a briefing after the raid.
The club's president, Firoz, and four staff members -- Hafizul Islam, Harun, Anwar Hossain, and Liton Mia -- were detained during the drive, the RAB official said.
He said the RAB personnel along with Firoz searched the club and recovered 500 packs of playing cards, one foreign pistol with three bullets, and some yaba tablets.
"The firearm is unlicensed, and the yaba tablets are yellow in colour which seems to be new in the country," he said.
The elite force will file two cases against the club president with Dhanmondi police station on charges of possessing illegal arms and drugs, Ashique Billah said.
RAB Executive Magistrate Md Gausul Azam was also present during the raid.
Before the drive on Friday, around 1:30pm, RAB detained Firoz, also a leader of Bangladesh Krishak League.
Firoz is a Central Executive Committee member of the ruling party's affiliated organization, said another committee member Azizul Islam Nannu.
From right before detention of Firoz, the elite force encircled the club premises.
The move comes in the wake of a massive clampdown on gamblers that started on Wednesday.
