Only 150 candidates who won the upazila election race will be served notices
Although the ruling Awami League's high command has echoed several times that it will show-cause rebel candidates and those who supported them, the party is now going to show-cause only the rebel candidates.
A total 150 party nominated candidates were defeated by rebel candidates in the upazila elections. The decision to show-caused only the rebel candidates was taken at the party's local government nomination board meeting, chaired by Awami League President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, on Saturday night.
Asking to remain anonymous, an Awami League presidium member told Dhaka Tribune they have finalized a list of 150 rebel candidates and those who supported them, including ministers, lawmakers and district leaders.
"There were some big names including two ministers, three central leaders, and Bangladesh ODI cricket team captain Mashrafe Mortaza in the list. After checking the list, the party president instructed the committee members to send show-cause notices to only the rebel candidates," said the presidium member.
The show-cause notices will be sent on Monday, he added.
However, Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader on Saturday said the notices will be served on Sunday (September 8).
Earlier on Saturday morning, Awami League made a list of rival candidates and their supporters at a meeting of joint general secretaries and organizing secretaries, at the party president's political office in Dhanmondi.
Awami League joint General Secretary Abdur Rahman said the decision was taken to maintain organizational discipline.
