Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has announced that it will hold a human chain in Dhaka on September 11, and across the country on September 12, demanding the release of party chairperson Khaleda Zia.

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir announced the programs at a press briefing at its central office at Naya Paltan in the capital on Sunday.

The party would hold rallies in Sylhet on September 21, Mymensingh on September 26, and in Rajshahi on September 27, demanding the same.

A rally would also be held in Rangpur, he said, but the date would be announced later.

At the briefing, Mirza Fakhrul alleged, the government was not providing better treatment to Khaleda Zia, and thus pushing her towards death.

Khaleda Zia has been undergoing treatment at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) for various ailments since April 1.

The BNP chief has been serving prison term, being convicted in Zia Orphanage Trust graft case on February 8, 2018. Later, she was also convicted in Zia Charitable Trust graft case.

Fakhrul said the BSMMU vice chancellor, and the medical board formed for the BNP chairperson claimed that Khaleda Zia was doing well now.

In fact, he said, all this was part of a conspiracy to take her back to jail.

Fakhrul, however, demanded the government let the BNP chief avail herself of the opportunity to get treatment at a hospital of her own liking.

Otherwise, the government would be held responsible for any deterioration of her health condition, the BNP leader added.
