'All the culprits involved in the August 21 grenade attack will be brought to justice'

Government will take initiatives to bring back all fugitive culprits in the August 21 grenade attack cases, according to Liberation War Affairs Minister AKM Mozammel Huq.

The minister made the remark in a written speech during a discussion and prayer ceremony at the National Press Club yesterday.

Bangladesh Journalist Rights Forum (BJRF) President Azizul Islam Bhuiyan read the speech on behalf of the Liberation War Affairs minister, as AKM Mozammel Huq was under instruction from doctors to refrain from talking due to a recent dental surgery.

The discussion and prayer ceremony was arranged by BJRF, named “'Criminal activities by the state and role of mass media between August 15, 1975, and August 21, 2004.” The BJRF president presided over the session.

“All the culprits involved in the August 21 grenade attack will be brought to justice,” the minister wrote in the speech.

He also offered condolences for those killed in the attacks on August 15, 1975, and August 21, 2004.

Presenting the keynote paper, BJRF General Secretary Ataur Rahman said: "To provide proper rights to journalists, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was on his way to building a stable and economy based country. Unfortunately, his life was taken. The assassination of Bangabandhu on August 15, 1975, and the attack on his daughter on August 21, 2004, are interconnected. The killers wanted to erase the family as well as democracy in the country."

Farida Yasmin, general secretary of the National Press Club, said: "It was the duty of law enforcement and intelligence agencies to provide security to the people as well as politicians, but they failed in 2004. Moreover, they helped the culprits to carry out the attack and escape, following the instructions of the then ruling party. We got proof with the reopening of the case during the Fakhruddin Ahmed-led caretaker government."

Farida urged the government to bring back the fugitive culprits to the country and to implement the full verdict.

Md Harun-Or-Rashid Hawlader, president of Bangladesh Upazila Association, said: "In Pakistan, Muslims are attacked by other Muslims, even inside mosques. But nowadays in Bangladesh, far from Muslims attacking Muslims, Hindus don’t even think about attacking Muslims, and Muslims don’t think about attacking Hindus. This is only possible because Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is in power, as she survived the August 21 attack."

Awami League lawmaker and General Secretary of Jatiya Mahila Sramik League, Begum Shamsun Nahar Bhuiyan, member of Awami League sub-committee, Balaram Poddar, and President of the National Press Club, Md Saiful Alam, were present among others.
