The owners of Alif Apparel Ltd shut down the factory without prior notice
Hundreds of garment workers blocked Dhaka’s Shyamoli, intersection for three hours, after the owners of a garment factory shut the factory without prior notice.
Protests began on Wednesday morning when workers of Alif Apparel Ltd came to join work after the Eid vacation, and found the main door locked and a signboard saying the factory will be closed for an indefinite period.
The workers also blocked the Shyamoli intersection, demanding payment of their dues and compensation.
Talking to Dhaka Tribune, the agitated workers said the factory owners previously assured them that all their dues will be paid and compensation will be offered if the factory is shut down. However, when they arrived for work, they found the main door locked and the factory closed for an indefinite period.
At 11pm, police convinced the workers to withdraw the blockade from the roads and traffic was allowed to pass through the intersection. However, the workers continued their protest in front of the factory building.
“Additional police force has been deployed in the area since morning to avert any untoward incidents,” DMP Deputy Commissioner (Mohammadpur Zone) Shibli Noman told Dhaka Tribune.
