Rescue teams still looking for the one missing

One person has been killed and another is still missing after an Old Dhaka building collapsed on Wednesday.

The deceased is still to be identified.

Confirming the matter to Dhaka Tribune Bangladesh Fire Service and Civil Defence headquarters’ duty officer Rasel Shikder said: "We have recovered one body from the spot. There is still another person missing.

"Total three teams of ours have been working in search of the victims."

However, locals have said two fruit-sellers, Jahedul Bepari, 60 and his son Shafiqul Bepari, 18, used to reside in the building, and they have been missing since Tuesday night.

They fear the corpse that was recovered by the Fire Service belongs to Jahedul. But Fire Service and police have said since no one has identified his body yet, they cannot confirm the deceased's identity.

The cause of the collapse of the two storied building on the 6th lane in Patuatuli is not clear.

Meanwhile, Kotwali police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Shahedur Rahman said: "We heard that there were some people may yet be trapped, although we are not certain.

"Fire service is working there."

Local people said the building was up to 100 years old and was abandoned.

Reports say that the building is government property. But it was unclear which government agency is responsible for the building's maintenance.
