President M Abdul Hamid has asked divisional and deputy commissioners (DCs) to serve as real “public servants”, and give priority to greater interests of the country.

“In your respective workplaces, keep up the difference between responsibilities, and powers... Do not misuse power.

Take government services to the people’s doorsteps,” he told the administrative chiefs of divisions and districts at the Darbar Hall of Bangabhaban on Monday evening.

The head of the state addressed them as the commissioners, and the DCs rallied in the capital to join the annual DC conference to interact with policymakers on development, and governance issues, and set out priorities and guidelines for working in the next one year, reports BSS.

Stressing on the efficient leadership of the district administrative officers, he said, the DCs must provide effective, and proper leadership to fulfill the people’s fundamental rights, and ensure social safety, and women empowerment.

“Keep in mind so that no real poor remains out of the program coverage,” the president added.

He said Bangladesh has earned worldwide appreciation for its tremendous development in different sectors, especially self-sufficiency in food production.

The president also ordered them to take steps to stop the wrongdoings of vested quarters, like the paddy farmers are being deprived of getting fair prices of their products.

Referring to different development projects in housing, education, expansion of industry-based agriculture, medical services, electricity, gas, water and sewerage system, the president asked the DCs to turn upazila towns into modern townships.

He also suggested the DCs to continue their efforts in line with the government set services to build a “Digital Bangladesh” to reach the ICT services to the grassroots-level.

About the existing land management, the president asked them to stay tough on the dishonest officials and employees, and the excesses of the influential quarters.

“Be tough to stop any kind of irregularities, and ease the suffering of mass people,” he added.

“The government follows ‘zero tolerance’ policy against the drug abuse. So, you have to take a comprehensive measure to build a narcotics-free society, as the drug abuse is pushing the country’s young generation towards ruination,” he observed.

Terming corruption as a key barrier to development, he asked the DCs to build a culture of transparency, and accountability at all strata of administration.

The president also advised them to utilize their talents, and expertise by implementing different development programs of the government, for the betterment of the people.

Being imbued with the spirit of the liberation struggle and patriotism, the DCs would work with devotion, and perfection to materialize the dream of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, he hoped.

At the outset of his address, the President paid rich tribute to the greatest Bengali of all-time, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, and all martyrs who sacrificed their valuable lives in different movements, including the 1971 Liberation War, and the Language Movement.

Cabinet Secretary M Shafiul Alam, Chattogram divisional commissioner Md Abdul Mannan, and Sylhet DC M Kazi Emdadul Haque also spoke there.

Divisional commissioners, concerned  secretaries at the Bangabhaban, and DCs were present on the occasion.
