The attackers came out of an SUV and fled the scene immediately after the attack

A Dhaka Tribune journalist was brutally beaten up by three people on Abdul Gani Road in front of Shikkha Bhaban in Dhaka.

The incident occurred near the High Court intersection when Ahsan Bari, apprentice sub-editor at Dhaka Tribune, was heading home on his motorbike around 1am on Sunday.

Bari said a dark coloured speeding SUV (sports utility vehicle) nearly hit his motorcycle when it was rushing towards the Doyel Chottor intersection from the vicinity of Matsya Bhaban.

“I immediately stopped my motorcycle as the SUV was about to hit me from the side. When I protested asking them why they were driving so recklessly, the SUV stopped immediately and three men, presumably high on drugs or alcohol, jumped out of the car and started to beat me up mercilessly without saying a word,” he said.

“I asked them numerous times why they were hitting me, but they did not respond to my call and continued to assault me.”

The attackers quickly fled the scene, leaving Bari on the ground with a swollen black eye.

With the help of bystanders, Bari was taken to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) and released after first-aid.

Following the incident, Bari called 999 and a team from Shahbag police station came to the scene. A proctorial team of Dhaka University (DU) also rushed to the spot after being informed by our university correspondent.

Dhaka University authorities also assured that they would assist the police by handing over CCTV footage of the incident to identify the attackers.

A general diary has been lodged with Shahbagh police station on Sunday.

Contacted, Shahbag police station duty officer Sub Inspector Md Aslam said they have recorded the general diary and an official will be assigned to investigate the incident.
