Police have recovered the body of a woman from a pond of the abandoned central jail at the capital’s Nazimuddin Road on Wednesday.
The deceased was identified as Azmeri Begum, 25. Police said Azmeri was mentally challenged.
Chawk Bazar Police Station SI Jahangir Alam said Azmeri’s body was recovered around midnight on Wednesday from the pond beside the old central jail mosque. The body was handed over to the victim’s relatives following an autopsy.
Citing relatives, SI Alam said Azmeri, a resident of Abul Hasnat Road, was unmarried and had been suffering from a mental illness for a long time.
Azmeri’s father took her to a doctor earlier in the day. She went missing from the house around 8pm, he added.
"She did not know how to swim. No injury marks were found on her body," he added.
An unnatural death case has been filed with the police station over the incident.
