Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan on Sunday said a man of Bangladeshi descent arrested in the United States for conspiring to carry out attacks in New York City was not a Bangladeshi, hence the country is not liable for him.

The minister made the remarks while greeting reporters after Eid at the Secretariat, reports UNB.

He said the American police were looking into the Ashiqul Alam, the suspect, and his possible links, but as he is an American citizen and not Bangladeshi, the nation is not liable for him.

Ashiqul Alam, a 22-year-old, was arrested after purchasing two illegally modified pistols from undercover law enforcement officers. He had praised Osama Bin Laden and aspired to emulate his 9/11 attack by carrying out his own rampage in Times Square.
