Bus operators claimed that the buses had mostly been sticking to their schedule in the last few days but heavy rain on Sunday had resulted in delays.

Although Chittagong-bound passengers are facing less hassle compared to previous Eids, bus passengers headed for the northern and southern regions of Bangladesh have had no such luck.

Bus operators claimed that the buses had mostly been sticking to their schedule in the last few days but heavy rain yesterday had resulted in delays.

People returning to their home districts for the upcoming Eid holidays were seen waiting for hours at the Gabtoli, Mazar road, and Kallyanpur bus counters.

Afzal Rahman, an SR Travels passenger, was supposed to leave Dhaka for Rangpur at around 8am yesterday, but had not been able to get on a bus until 9am.

"The operators keep us waiting for hours before letting us board a bus. This hassle before Eid is intolerable, and the passengers of the northern and southern regions of Bangladesh fall victim to this situation every year," Afzal complained.

Mahbubul Haque of Haque Enterprise said the buses are being delayed as the road situation worsened following heavy rainfall early yesterday. "There is also a lot of traffic on the road."

However, he claimed that the buses have mostly been on time compared to previous years, and the passengers are having a much smoother journey this year.

Hanif Enterprise Khulna route Assistant Manager Mohammad Sohel said: "Although there is less congestion on the roads this year, ferry terminals have had a lot of pressure today, resulting in buses having to wait there for a long time."

Several operators of Chittagong-bound bus counters said, opening of two bridges on Gumti and Meghna rivers on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway have given some relief to the passengers this year.

While visiting the Mohakhali bus counter, The Dhaka Tribune found that there were sufficient number of vehicles at the bus stand till 10:30am.

Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader, in a press briefing at the secretariat,  said indiscipline is the major reason behind the traffic rush this year.

However, he claimed that he had not received any information on intolerable traffic till now.

"Traffic congestion worsens as people start driving in a disorderly manner to rush to their destinations. Nobody obeys traffic rules. Also, transport staff compel  passengers to get off in the middle of the road," Quader added.

Terming traffic control as a "test" for the ministry, the minister said: “We have to pass this test. Journalists also have a responsibility to spread public awareness."
