Allegedly, the gold was due to be delivered to an airport official
Customs officials have detained a man for possessing 103 gold bars—weighing at total 10.3kg—at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.
The detainee, Md Abdus Salam, 48, arrived in Dhaka—from Singapore—on a Singapore Airlines flight at 10:40pm on Monday, reports UNB.
Salam, who hails from Gazipur, had visited Singapore five times this month, airport sources said.
Dhaka Airport Customs House Deputy Commissioner Othello Chowdhury said: "When asked by customs officials, Salam denied carrying any taxable products."
However, they found the presence of metal substances in his pants while checking him, he said, adding that they recovered the gold bars in two packets, worth Tk5.15 crore, wrapped in scotch tape.
Salam said one HM Nuruzzaman alias Ziko, from Khilkhet in Dhaka, owns the gold.
"An airport official was supposed to receive the gold consignment and hand it over to Ziko," Salam claimed.
Salam also showed a photo of Ziko and his passport, on his mobile phone, to the customs officials.
However, he could not provide detailed information about the airport official.
