A mobile court of the Bangladesh Safe Food Authority (BSFA), led by Executive Magistrate Hosne Aara Popy, imposed the fine
The Baily Road outlet of popular fast food chain Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) has been fined Tk4 lakh for possessing expired chicken.
A mobile court of the Bangladesh Safe Food Authority (BSFA), led by Executive Magistrate Hosne Aara Popy, imposed the fine after it found 18kg of expired chicken at the KFC outlet on Tuesday.
“We found 10 packets of expired chicken, weighing 1.8kg each, at the KFC outlet,” she said.
Storing and selling expired or adulterated food is a jail-able offence, and the offenders can also be fined or subjected to both penalties.
“Other than imposing the fine, we also warned the KFC branch authorities for such a criminal act,” the executive magistrate added, mentioning that the outlet and kitchen were otherwise very clean.
The BSFA also carried out a drive in the Shantinagar area to verify if the 52 food products that the Bangladesh Standard Testing Institution had found to be substandard were still on sale.
“The substandard products were not available at shops there, as shop owners and local market management committees removed them,” Hosne Aara Popy said.
