Two RAB officials were also injured

Two suspected covered van hijackers have been killed in a reported “gunfight” with Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in Dhaka’s Hazaribagh.

The incident occurred near a Beribadh checkpost in front of Modhu city around 2:30am on Monday.

The deceased are: driver Monir, 48, and his helper, Gias.

Meanwhile, two other RAB officials were also injured: Assistant Sub-inspector (ASI) Kasem and ASI Nazrul Islam.

RAB 2 Superintendent of Police Mohiuddin Faruque told the Dhaka Tribune that the “gunfight” was among a covered van driver, a helper and RAB.

He said: “We set up three check posts at Beribadh area. On a tip-off, we found out a covered van was coming from Old Dhaka.”

“The van driver and helper opened fire at us when we tried to stop the covered van as it was speeding across the checkpost,” he said.

The RAB official said the duo had hijacked the covered van, which contained tea, four to five days ago from Moulvibazar in Sylhet.

RAB seized seven tons of tea from the covered van.
