His bail petition was denied by the court
A Dhaka magistrate court sent lawyer Imtiaz Mahmood to jail under the ICT Act after he was arrested on Wednesday. The lawyer was arrested in the morning for a pending case under Section 57. His bail petition was denied by the court.
Khagrachhari police OC Shahadat Hossain Tito said local resident Md Shofikul Islam filed the case against Imtiaz on July 21, 2017.
The case accuses Imtiaz of spreading rumours, hurting religious sentiments, and deteriorating the law and order situation through several Facebook posts on Bangali residents of hill areas and law enforcement.
Imtiaz’s lawyer Md Robiul Islam said his client was granted bail by the High Court on July 25, 2017, and a Khagrachhari court issued an arrest warrant against him on January 21, 2019.
Protesters under the banner “Shahbagh against Repression” formed a human chain on Wednesday in front of National Museum demanding Imtiaz’s unconditional release.
In addition, PEN Bangladesh, a platform of Bangladesh-based writers, poets, publishers, editors, translators, journalists, and academics, also condemned his arrest and imprisonment.
