In the early hours of Wednesday, two girls were found grievously injured, on Uttara’s Jashimuddin Avenue, and were declared dead when taken to a hospital.

Sometime before 4am, patrolling watchmen heard cries for help from a one-storey building. When they went to investigate, they found two girls sprawled on the rooftop. They were taken to Crescent Hospital, where the girls were declared dead. One of them was found to have broken her legs and arms.

Uttara (West) police arrived at the hospital and identified the two girls as Ruby, 17, and Halima, 14. They worked as domestic help at an apartment owned by a garments businessman, Majedul.

Majedul’s apartment is in a six-storey building next to the one in which the two girls were found.

Officer-in-Charge Tapan Chandra Saha said police inspected the CCTV footage and saw the two girls leave the apartment with bags. It is not yet known where they were headed.

He said it remains to be ascertained if they were pushed off the roof or if they willingly jumped off it.

The police officer said more will be revealed after the autopsy, which will take place at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
