A number of similar incidents were reported in March

An Awami League leader has been detained with an undeclared firearm at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka.

On Thursday, airport security personnel detained Molla Mujibor Rahman Shamim, chairman of Chitalmari Upazila Parishad in Bagerhat, after he entered the domestic terminal with a pistol, Director of Aviation Security at the airport Nur Siddiqui told Bangla Tribune.

“Security personnel quizzed him as to why he entered the airport with a gun, Shamim could not provide any satisfactory response,” he said, adding that legal action will be taken against Shamim.

Incidents of entering the airport with undeclared firearms are on the rise, with at least two detentions reported in March, at Dhaka airport.

The issue of airport security came to the limelight after 23-year-old Md Palash Ahmed, wielding a toy gun, hijacked a Dubai-bound Biman Bangladesh Airlines plane, after it took off from Dhaka and was heading for Chittagong, on February 24.

According to the authorities concerned, the metal detector did not raise any alarm as the gun was fake, and Palash consequently managed to avoid a body search.

Alarmingly, multiple security breaches occurred at the airport since then, where passengers, either accidentally or intentionally carried licensed firearms, past security and without detection, before declaring them.
