Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Atiqul Islam has said organizations that do not ensure fire safety will lose their trade licence.

He made the statement while talking to the media at the DNCC Nagar Bhaban in Dhaka's Gushan 2 area Saturday morning before setting out to visit 20 different buildings that house various shopping malls and educational institutions.

He said: “If the necessary safety measures are not in place, we will give the organizations a certain amount of time to make corrections. If they fail to produce results within that timeframe, we will revoke their trade licence.”

He added that a magistrate will also be present during these inspections.

Mayor Atiqul said these inspections are being conducted under a DNCC wing.

“We have requested the government to grant this wing more authority so we can better perform the task of ensuring fire safety within the DNCC area,” he said.

He said the wing will continue inspection of buildings in the city corporation area till further notice.

“Several NGOs are helping with the inspection process,” he added.

Complaint boxes

Mayor Atiqul said complaint boxes will be setup in every DNCC regional office.

“I promise if the complaints are proven to be true, we will take swift action,” he said.

He requested both employers and employees to be vigilant regarding fire safety and building security.

“This city was mostly built without much planning. But now it is up to all of us to ensure fire, electric and building safety for the citizens,” he said.
