6 suspected fraudsters held in Mirpur

They had been posing as Customs Department officials

Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has detained six suspected members of a fraud gang, who posed as Customs Department officials.

Those arrested are: Nurul Haque, 57; Shekh Alam, 43; Firoj Alam, 57; Mosharof Hossain, 54; Masud Rana, 43; and Renu Miya alias Roni, 38.

They were detained at Tolarbagh area of Mirpur on Wednesday.

Confirming the matter, RAB 4 Commanding Officer (CO) Chowdhury Monzurul Kabir said: “The fraud ring amassed crores from 50 victims and has been defrauding people for the past fifteen-to-sixteen years.”

He added that in their primary inquiry they found three cases had been filed against Nurul and two others against Shekh Alam.

The official said Nurul identified himself as a customs assistant commissioner, while Shekh Alam posed as a superintendent; Firoj posed as an office assistant, while Mosharof and Masud worked as brokers and Roni as a driver.

“They conned money from victims—saying they would get the individuals good jobs—and in this way defrauded individuals of crores of taka. We will soon take legal action against them,” the RAB CO added.
