Members of Bangladesh Chhatra League of Salimullah Muslim Hall unit of Dhaka University have allegedly slapped and harassed newly elected Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (Ducsu) Vice President Nurul Haque Nur.

The VP went to the hall to meet its provost to formally protest against an assault allegedly carried out by Chhatra League activists on Farid Hasan, who collected a nomination form for the general secretary post in hall union elections.

On Tuesday afternoon, activists of Bangladesh General Students’ Rights Protection Council, under the leadership of Ducsu VP Nurul Haque Nur, several members of Swatantra Jote, and panel members who boycotted the Ducsu polls, formed a human chain in front of the Raju Sculpture to protest the assault on Farid.

When the protesters went to the hall to meet its provost, Chhatra League activists tried to bar them from meeting the provost and threw eggs on them.

During the scuffle, Nur was surrounded by Chhatra League activists and reportedly slapped by hall union VP Kamal Hossain, alleged the Ducsu VP.

Farid, a postgraduate student of the university's Urdu department, was forced to pull out of the election race after allegedly facing threats by members of the Chhatra League, he claimed.

Farid said several members of the ruling party’s student wing led by Wasif Hasan Pias, vice-president of the hall unit, forcibly took him from his room to the hall’s dining room around 11:30pm on Monday night.

In the presence of hall union general secretary Julius Caesar, hall unit Chhatra League President Tahsan Ahmed Rasel and expelled Chhatra League leader Mizanur Rahman Pikul, hall unit Chhatra League General Secretary Mehedi Hasan Taposh started to beat him up brutally, Farid claimed.

Farid, who claimed to be an activist of the party, was immediately taken to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where the duty doctor treated him with 32 stitches.

However, Mehedi Hasan Taposh denied the allegations saying that the allegation brought against him was false and baseless.

Meanwhile, hall Provost Dr Md Mahbubul Alam Joarder could not be reached over phone despite repeated attempts.
