Wiring, false ceilings, and carpeting helped the fire spread rapidly
The authorities of FR Tower, in Dhaka’s Banani, were issued with three fire safety notices before Thursday’s deadly blaze, Fire Service and Civil Defence Director (Training and Development Project) Lt Col SM Julfiqur Rahman told the Dhaka Tribune.
“When examining the building after dousing the fire, we found that many fire safety measures were not present, even though we had previously sent three notices to FR Tower in this regard,” the Fire Service director said.

“The staircases leading out of the building were extremely cramped. Furthermore, the security gates of some of the offices in the building were locked, impeding the escape [routes] of the fire victims,” he added.
The Fire Service director furthered that proper fire control measures were not present in the building, while wiring, false ceilings, and carpeting helped the fire spread rapidly.
“Most who were killed died due to suffocation after smoke filled up the building. Considering the poor state of fire safety measures in the tower, the number of casualties could have been much higher had it not been for the efforts of fire fighters,” he said.
