Dhaka South City Corporation disconnected utility lines of two warehouses and six factories during its drive in Hazaribag of Old Dhaka.
Utility lines of a total of eight warehouses and factories in the Hazaribag area were disconnected after DSCC teams found highly flammable substances and raw plastic materials inside them on Monday.
Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) disconnected utility lines of two warehouses and six factories during its drive in Hazaribag of Old Dhaka on Monday.
Of the total eight, all the utility lines of two warehouses and four factories were disconnected. Only electricity lines of the rest two factories were cut off taking into consideration people living in the residential buildings housing the warehouses.
A team, led by air commodore Md Zahid Hossain, chief waste management officer of DSCC, launch the drive around 12:00pm on Monday.Only the electricity lines of Diamond Industries situated at 19 Monesshor road have been disconnected, while only water and gas lines were disconnected at a Roxy Paints factory, situated at 26/5, also on Monesshor lane.
“We have disconnected only gas and water lines of the Roxy Paints factory since its employees are transferring raw materials and equipment to their new factory, situated on the outskirts of Dhaka,” said Zahid.
“We will disconnect the electricity lines of the factory too if they fail to shift their materials within three days,” he added.
Zahid Hossain said: “We will immediately restore utility services again, free of cost, if the owners relocate their warehouses and factories away from the residential area.”
All utility connections disconnected
All the utility services of Golden Eagle Toothbrush factory at holding number 7 on Nilambor Saha Road, and Pride Rubber Industry on 24/1Monesshor Road, were disconnected.
All the utility lines of a 5-storey building, holding no. 50/1 on Nilambor Saha Road, housing Tri Star Toothbrush and Company were disconnected as the DSCC team found a compressor tank with silicone mould spray, which is highly flammable and risky.
“According to government directives, no factories or warehouses with inflammable substances are allowed in residential areas,” he said.
DSCC Public Relations Officer Uttam Kumar Roy said, the teams of DSCC have disconnected utility lines of a total of 29 holdings in old Dhaka and Hazaribag areas on Monday.
“Utility services of a total of 76 holdings were disconnected in the last four days of drives and the operation will continue till April,” he added.
Following the fire incident that claimed the lives of 71 people at Nanda Kumar Lane in Chawkbazar’s Churihatta area on February 20, the city corporation started drives against illegal chemical warehouses and factories on February 28.
Meanwhile, businessmen and workers in Old Dhaka created barriers and chased away a Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) task force when it tried to crack down on chemical warehouses and factories for the second consecutive day.
