‘The gang primarily targeted retired government, non-government officials, and businessmen’
Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), in separate drives arrested 22 members of a gang of extortionists from different areas in Dhaka.
The elite force conducted raids in the capital including Mirpur, Darussalam, Uttara, and Rampura in Dhaka, from Friday evening to Saturday morning, and arrested members of the gang with corroborating document.
After a primary interrogation, RAB learned that for the last 15 years, they pulled off enormous cons and made away with more than Tk100 crore.
RAB Media Wing Director, Mufti Mahmud Khan, confirmed the matter during a press briefing at the RAB media centre in Karwan Bazar on Saturday.
“They devised five major cons in order to obtain large sums of money from their victims.”
“The gang primarily targeted retired government, non-government officials, and businessmen.”
“They procured outlandish offices, expensive cars, and with proper entourage, attracted potential investors to fraudulent schemes.
“They secured the funds with promises of high returns on investment and persuaded them by signing fake contracts.”
“Once they had the cash in hand, they would disappear along with their offices.”
Mufti said: “These fraudsters did not operate like other con gangs. They were professional, planned their actions meticulously, and executed them carefully.”
“They also conned contractors with promises of lucrative project contracts, conning businessmen in gambling traps and fake business deals” he added.
