Update : 21 Feb 2019, 01:14 PM

Eight people, including two brothers, are among the dozens of victims that lost their lives in a massive fire that gutted an Old Dhaka neighbourhood.

The deceased brothers are Masudur Rahman Raju and Masud Rana. Rana got married for just 15 days.

Describing the horrific turn of events, two of the victims’ uncle, Abdur Rahim, told the Dhaka Tribune: “My nephews tried to save themselves from the inferno by locking themselves — with six others — in their mobile phone shop Rana Telecom, in Chawkbazar.

“They closed the shutter in an attempt to escape the fire, but everyone inside the shop died of smoke inhalation. Masud Rana had married just 15 days before this incident.”

At least 70 people were killed in a massive fire that engulfed several multi-storey buildings at Nanda Kumar Lane in Chawkbazar’s Churihatta area in Old Dhaka.

Around 11am, Maj AKM Shakil Nawaz, director (Operations and Maintenance) of Bangladesh Fire Service and Civil Defence, told the Dhaka Tribune that the fire had been doused.
