10 victims of Chawkbazar fire from Noakhali

Family members and relatives  broke down after identities were  confirmed of the fire victims

At least 10 victims of the tragic Chawkbazar fire were identified to be from Noakhali.

Of the 10 fire victims, eight were from Nateshwar union of Sonaimuri upazila and the other two were from Begumganj and Companiganj upazilas.

Nateshwar UP Chairman Kabir Hossain and Sonaimuri police station OC Abdus Samad confirmed the identities of eight victims on Thursday. 

Among the eight, two brothers, Masudur Rahman Raju, 28, and Masud Rana, 30, hailed from the union’s Ghoshkamta area. 

The brothers were identified at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) by their father Md Saheb Ali and uncle Abdur Rahim, who were bringing the bodies back home.

The other fire victims are Miyon Hazi Bari’s Md Ali, 55, Bottola area’s Shahadat Hossain Hira, 27, Mirza Nagar’s Anwar Hossain Manjur, 28, Nasir Uddin, 29, Ward 4’s Siddiqullah, and Mizhi Bari’s Helaluddin, confirmed the UP chairman.

Begumganj police station OC, Firoz Alam Molla, confirmed the identity of Kamal Hossain, 45, and said his body was handed over to family members.

Companiganj police station OC, Md Asaduzzaman, confirmed the identity of Jasim Uddin, 45, and said the victim worked at a cosmetics store in Chawkbazar. 

Sonaimuri police station OC, Abdus Samad, said at least 30-35 fire victims of the Chawkbazar fire might be from Nateshwar union of Sonaimuri upazila.

UP Chairman Kabir Hossain also said at least 3,000 residents of Nateshwar union work in Dhaka, including in the Chawkbazar area, so the number of victims and injured hailing from the union may rise.

Sorrow has overcast the union as victims’ family members and relatives broke down after their identities were confirmed. Relatives are on their way to collect the bodies of their loved ones.
