‘I want to be a mayor who aspires to be a public servant’
Ruling party Awami League-nominated mayoral candidate for Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC), Atiqul Islam, has asked all to work together to build a healthy and modern Dhaka city.
“If I can educate residents to be aware of their responsibilities to the city, we can build a better Dhaka. I want to be a mayor who aspires to be a public servant,” he added.
Atiqul Islam made this statement at a discussion meeting, ‘Agami Projonmer Shopner Dhaka,’ at the Lakeshore Hotel in Dhaka on Tuesday morning.
He also reiterated his plan to develop a smartphone app to efficiently deal with the city’s problems.
“Residents will be able to file complaints through the app, after which we will take action to resolve the matter within 48 hours,” he said.
On February 12, Atiqul, former president of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), unveiled his election manifesto, ‘Shobai Miley, Shobar Dhaka.’
He said: “Dhaka’s problems can only be solved if we all work together. The City Corporation will fulfil its obligations to residents and we ask for their (citizens) contributions too to help us transform our city.”
He pledged to complete the projects and development works undertaken by previous mayors and also pursue new projects to ease the sufferings of millions of people.
Atiqul said he would take action to solve the scourge of mosquitoes, improve air quality, increase facilities for sports and outdoor activities, improve the drainage system, and also increase parking spaces.
