The places have been identified and will be decorated with relevant replicas to show people the real history, Engineer Mosharraf said
The government has taken up a project worth Tk 250-300 crore for Suhrawardy Udyan to help posterity know all the historic events that it witnessed, including the historic March 7, 1971, speech of Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
Senior ruling party MP and former Housing and Public Works Minister, Engineer Mosharraf Hossain, disclosed this in Parliament on Sunday.
"Work on the Tk 250-300 crore project has already started." President Ziaur Rahman tried to erase history by setting up a children’s park and erasing the places from where Bangabandhu delivered his historic speech and the Pakistan Army surrendered, the minister said.
The places have been identified and will be decorated with relevant replicas to show people the real history, Engineer Mosharraf said.
"A statue will be erected on the spot from where Bangabandhu delivered the historic speech and the children's park will also remain there," he said.
Referring to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Mosharraf said children will come and visit these historic places.
Later, taking the floor on a point of order, senior ruling party MP, Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim, highlighted the events that took place at the historic spot, and also talked about Bangabandhu, insisting on immediate completion of the project.
Veteran Awami League leader and former Commerce Minister, Tofail Ahmed, also touched upon the issue and shared his memories of historic political events.
"Suhrawardy Udyan witnessed many historic events. It bears many memories. It must be preserved," said the Awami League leader.
Suhrawardy Udyan has served as a symbol of certain fundamental Bengali political aspirations, especially since 1969.
