The deceased’s body has been sent to DMCH morgue for autopsy
A Notre Dame University Bangladesh student was found dead inside an apartment in Dhaka's Sabujbagh-Kadamtala area on Tuesday night.
The deceased was identified as Yougen Hanasie Gonsalves, 22, a second-year BBA student of the university.
Sabujbagh police station Sub-Inspector (SI) Kamruzzaman told the Dhaka Tribune: "The deceased had multiple injury marks from sharp weapons on his body. We suspect that he has been murdered."
"The deceased was supposed to move into this apartment this month. The landlord found the apartment gate open, and upon entering, he saw blood on the floor.
"When informed, police recovered the body in the early hours of Wednesday with his hands and feet tied up. The body has been sent to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) morgue for autopsy," he added.
Sohel Mahmud, head of DMCH forensic medicine department, said: “In the post mortem examination, we found several sharp weapon wounds in different parts of the body.
“He might have been killed with sharp weapons in between 9:30pm and 10:00pm Tuesday.”
Requesting anonymity, a police official said that police were now hunting at least two women for their suspected involvement in the killing.
One Sabita had rented the apartment and paid advance of Tk5000, the official said. She introduced Yougen as her brother on Sunday and said she would shift there with her family in February, but was delaying due to some family problems.
However, only Yougen arrived at the building around 3:30pm on Tuesday to clean the flat as they would shift there soon, added the official.
Another burka-clad woman was seen in the CCTV camera footage of a nearby building accompanying the victim to the flat around 3:30pm on Tuesday, before the body was recovered around 10:30pm, police said.
“Sabita and the woman seen in the CCTV footage are different persons,” said the police official, adding: “We are now trying to find them.”
Meanwhile, Yougen’s sister Cindy Gonsalves said her brother used to live with his cousin at the city’s Narinda area. She has no idea why he would rent a flat.
She demanded immediate arrest of the perpetrators.
Yougen’s brother-in-law Rumen Penheiro said Yougen went to one of his sister’s house at Nadda on Friday. He left the house on Tuesday morning for university.
“We were anxious as he did not return till 10pm. His cell phone was switched off after ringing several times. We were informed about his death around 11:45pm and later identified the body at the flat,” he said.
A case was filed over the murder at Sabujbagh police station.
