Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal has said the new challenge for the police is to combat drugs from the society.

He made the statement on the 44th anniversary of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), at the Rajarbagh Police Lines in Dhaka on Wednesday.

He said: “Our police have taken Bangladesh to a reliable position in the world in terms of suppressing terrorism and militancy, efficiently.

“The government is working to announce the zero tolerance policy for drugs. We are working on to make the country drug free.”

“DMP members are relentlessly working to counter terrorism and drug abuse, which are acclaimed home and abroad,” he added.

The home minister further said: “For the last two terms of the government, 82,031 police personnel were appointed. The modernization and development trend of police is ongoing.

“The Prime Minister has given considerable priority to the police in such a way that if they (police) do not take responsibility for the country’s security, then development will lose momentum.”

Kamal also added: "Police is now transformed into a ‘man-of-the-kind’. Police 10-15 years ago and now are not the same. They have occupied faith in people’s hearts and regarded as a symbol of confidence.”
