The aspirant said he will work together with residents to solve the city’s problem
Promising to build a healthy, mobile and modern Dhaka, the ruling Awami League (AL) nominated mayoral candidate for Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) by-polls, Atiqul Islam, unveiled his election manifesto on Tuesday.
Atiqul, a former president of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), unveiled his election manifesto titled ‘Shobai Miley, Shobar Dhaka’ (United to build a Dhaka for all) at a city hotel.
The aspirant said he will work together with residents to solve the city’s problem.
He said: “Dhaka’s problems can only be solved if we all work together. City Corporation will fulfill its obligations to residents and we ask for their (citizens) contribution too to help us in transforming our city.”
He pledged to complete the projects and development work taken by previous mayors and also pursue new projects to ease the sufferings of millions of people.
Atiqul said that he will take action to solve the scourge of mosquitoes, improve air quality, increase facilities for sports and outdoor activities, and improve drainage system and increase parking spaces.
In his speech Atiq said: “As a mayoral candidate it’s my duty to take care of the poor people as well as the rich and I will fulfill my duties properly.”
In his election manifesto Atiqul Islam promised to construct special footpaths for physically challenged people, sufficient footover bridges, under passes to ensure road safety, separate lanes for bicycle and motorcycles, install a digital traffic system, app-based transport system, digitized bus stops, and bus and truck terminals, along with area-based multi-storeyed parking complexes. He also pledged to solve the water logging problem during the rainy season.
He pledged to take several steps to build a healthy Dhaka city including putting in place a sustainable waste management system. He will take initiatives to transform waste to power, construct parks and playgrounds with modern facilities and sufficient public toilets; farmers’ markets to ensure fresh vegetables for all.
He further said that he will form a special anti-corruption committee and will develop an app where people can file their complaints on corruption.
Atiqul also promised that he will eradicate the drug menace from the city and promote sports among the youth.
He expressed his determination to remove all establishments built along footpaths and public land.
The AL candidate said that he will introduce a transport system like Dhakar Chaka, an initiative taken by former mayor Annisul Huq, on all roads belonging to the DNCC areas.
Among others AL presidium member Lt Col (retd) Muhammad Faruk Khan, star cricketer Sakib Al Hasan, former state minister Tarana Halim were present at the manifesto unveiling program.
