Awami League celebrates its landslide victory in the 11th parliamentary election

Ruling Awami League President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has promised that her government will work for all, irrespective of political affiliation.

“Although Awami League won the election, I can assure that the Awami League government will work for all. People who voted for us or did not vote for us, I want to thank them all,” she said.

The premier made the remarks on Saturday, addressing a grand rally organized by the Awami League at Suhrawardy Udyan to celebrate their victory in the 11th parliamentary election.

She said: “We will ensure balanced development for all.”

Sheikh Hasina also vowed to uphold the value of the people’s vote.

She said: “Our country voted against corruption, terrorism, militancy, and drugs, and to build the country following the spirit of the 1971 Liberation War. I will sacrifice my life, if necessary, to protect their dignity.”

The prime minister extended her gratitude to the Election Commission for its efforts to hold a participatory general election.

She also thanked the people for casting votes and all political parties for participating in the election.

She also thanked the law enforcement agencies including intelligence branches for their tireless efforts to hold a “free, fair, and credible election.”

She also sought eternal peace for the people killed in the arson attack, where four national leaders, and members of her family were killed on August 15, 1975.

‘United forces always win’

The prime minister said: “The 11th general election has proved that united forces always win and Awami League’s win was the result of a united effort.”

She said that she will build a beautiful society for future generations.

The Awami League president promised she will protect the people’s dignity as they voted for her party in the December 30 polls, trusting it to build the country with the spirit of the Liberation War.

Hasina said: “I am a political worker and I have nothing to lose. Rather, I am ready to sacrifice my life to ensure betterment of the country and its people by showing respect to their votes.”

Sheikh Hasina, elder daughter of the Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, has been elected as prime minister of Bangladesh for the fourth term, and three consecutive terms in a row.

She said the Awami League government will implement promises made in the election manifesto to build a developed and prosperous country.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina reached the venue around 3pm and started her speech around 4:35pm.

The Awami League-led Grand Alliance secured a landslide victory in the 11th parliamentary election, winning 288 seats out of 299.

Though Awami League initially barred leaders and activists from celebrating their victory, they later  decided to celebrate the victory with a grand rally.

To make the event successful, Awami League leaders, activists, supporters, and the general public started gathering at the historic Suhrawardy Udyan in the morning with colorful rallies.

Singers, poets, and dancers performed at the event.

Top leaders of the party including Tofail Ahmed, Amir Hossain Amu, Obaidul Quader, Matia Chowdhury, and Abdur Rahman also addressed the rally.

DMP guidelines and traffic jams

A huge number of law enforcement agencies were deployed in and around the rally venue to avert any untoward incident.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) initially blocked several roads and made diversions which caused huge traffic jams in several areas of the city.

In Shahbagh, roads in and around the area were experiencing heavy traffic jams as supporters were gathering for the rally with huge processions.

The DMP put in place elaborate traffic guidelines to ensure the smooth flow of vehicles during the rally.

Commuting to and from work was challenging for many office workers.
