A 16-day-old infant has been killed in a brickbat accident on the roof of his home on Friday.

The deceased was identified as Abdullah, son of Kabir Hossain. Their family lives in the Jonaki Road area of Mirpur, Dhaka.

Around 9:30am, Abdullah’s 15-year-old aunt was sitting on the rooftop with him on her lap. They were enjoying the sun when a five inch brickbat hit the aunt in the head. The brick then bounced onto Abdullah’s head and gravely injured him as well.

Sources said the brick was thrown by a 3-year-old child who was playing on the roof of the next building, and hit the infant by accident.

Saiful Islam, a relative of Abdullah, said: “Some people are saying the brick was thrown by the child next door. But it is possible an adult may have been involved in the incident.”

The infant was first admitted to Dhaka Shishu Hospital and then transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), where he was declared dead around 12:55pm.

Pallabi police station OC Dadon Fakir told the Dhaka Tribune: “The brickbat that killed 16-day-old Abdullah was apparently thrown by a 3-year-old child and hit the infant accidentally. We are looking into the matter.”

The deceased’s father Kabir is a chauffeur by profession.

He said: “Abdullah was born 16 days ago in a local hospital.”

DMCH Police Outpost In-charge Md Bachchu Miah said the child’s body is currently in the hospital morgue for autopsy.
