Victims claim most of the Chhatra League men are followers of DU Unit Chhatra League President Sonjit Chandra Das
Chhatra League men have attacked the quota reformers at Dhaka University’s (DU) Teachers Student Centre (TSC) area on Sunday minutes before their pre-scheduled program, leaving at least five injured.
The injured are Jashim Uddin Akash, Tarek Rahman, Bin Yeamin Mollah, Ahmed Kabir and Sohrab Hossain—all joint conveners of Bangladesh General Students Rights Protection Council, the platform that spearheaded the recent quota reform movement.
Chhatra League activists carried out the attack on them half an hour prior to their scheduled program supposed to take place in front of Anti-Terrorism Raju Memorial Sculpture (Raju Bhashkorjo) at 3:00pm demanding a violence free election under the banner “Nirapad Bangladesh Chai.”
Witnesses said a group of Chhatra League men launched the attack on the quota reformists when they were preparing for lunch at TSC cafeteria. The attackers padlocked the gate of TSC and beat them mercilessly.
Sohrab, of the five, was severely injured. All the injured were taken to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital and underwent treatment there.
Injured Yeamin said they were supposed to hold a human chain demanding a violence free election.
He said: “Around 2:30 pm, when we went inside TSC to have lunch, 20 to 25 Chhatra League men including Shahidul Shan, school affairs secretary of Shaheed Sergeant Zahurul Haq Hall unit, Sohanur Rahman, vice president of Ziaur Rahman Hall attacked us without any provocation.
“They hurled abusive words towards us and punched, kicked and slapped us mercilessly.”
The victims claimed that most of the Chhatra League men are followers of DU Unit Chhatra League President Sonjit Chandra Das.
When contacted, Sonjit said he was unaware of the attack and would look into the matter.
DU Proctor Professor AKM Golam Rabban said: “No one has filed any compliant regarding the incident.”
“But I have already sent the proctorial team there after I was informed about the chaos. Quoting witnesses, they told me that a group was trying to stage a program which gave rise to a scuffle between the two groups.”
