The incident reportly took place at 8pm in the games room of Sher-e-Bangla Hall of Buet
A group of Chhatra League leaders of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet) assaulted allegedly three student reporters on Saturday night when they went there to ask around about an alleged abduction.
The incident reportedly took place at 8pm in the games room of Sher-e-Bangla Hall of Buet.
All the alleged victims are Dhaka University correspondents. They are Mehedi Hasan of Daily Kaler Kantho, Kabirul Islam Kanon of Daily Ittefaq, and SM Muntasir of Daily Janakantha.
It has been alleged that Chhatra League Joint Secretaries Md Iftekharul Haque Fahad and Nafiul Alam Fuji, Science and Technology Affairs Secretary SM Mahmud Setu, Deputy Office Secretary Asif Raihan Minar and Publicity Secretary Niladri Niloy Das confined the reporters inside the hall for at least one hour and assaulted them there.
Mehedi Hasan claimed that they went to Sher-e-Bangla Hall when they heard that some Buet students had picked up a student of the pharmacy department of DU and confined him inside the dormitory.
On reaching there, they found the hall gate locked and were denied access by the on-duty guard.
Later, they managed to enter the hall by signing the guest registry book, the journalists said.
Kabirul Islam said: “When we entered the hall, a group of Chhatra League activists appeared there and asked the reason for our visit. At one stage, they snatched our wallets, ID cards and mobile phones.”
“After that, they took us to the games room and assaulted us there for one hour,” he alleged.
They were released after senior leaders of Chhatra League and members of Dhaka University Journalists Association (DUJA) intervened, the journalists said.
“We went there to verify whether a DU student was picked up or not, because no one could give us authentic information. The Chhatra League men assaulted us even after we proved our identity,” added Mehedi Hasan.
When contacted, Buet unit Chhatra League President Jami Us Sani denied that any one was assaulted. Some students misbehaved with the journalists because of a “misunderstanding” between the two sides, he claimed.
DU Proctor Prof AKM Golam Rabbani said: “I have heard about the matter. It is regrettable. The university administration has informed the Sher-e-Bangla Hall administration. Further action will be taken after investigation.”
Meanwhile, DUJA on Sunday issued a statement condemning the incident and demanded exemplary punishment of the alleged assailants.
“If the accused Chhatra League men are not expelled from the organization within 24 hours, DUJA will take legal steps against them,” read the statement, signed by DUJA President Asif Taasin and General Secretary Mahmudul Hasan Nayon.
