Viqarunnisa show-causes teacher over student’s suicide

The teacher has also been withdrawn from her duties

Authorities of the Viqarunnisa Noon School and College in Dhaka have show-caused a teacher after the suicide of a ninth grader led to rage among students and parents.

Zinnat Ara, the morning shift in-charge of the institution’s main campus, was also told to refrain from duties from Tuesday, Governing Body Chairman Golam Ashraf Talukder told reporters.

The school’s move, however, came amid demonstrations outside the main campus in the city’s Bailey Road since the morning.

Acting principal Nazneen Ferdous also said that Zinnat was withdrawn as allegations had surfaced against her. “We have also started a probe.”

On Monday, the body of the ninth grader was found hanging from the ceiling fan of her room, which was locked from inside, in their Shantinagar home.

The 15-year-old girl’s family claimed that she killed herself after the school’s teachers including its principal insulted her and the parents of because she had allegedly cheated during an exam Sunday.
