Female ophthalmologist killed in Dhaka road accident

A female ophthalmologistwas killed in a road accident when a bus hit a CNG-run auto rickshawthat was transporting her, in an accident took place in Dhaka’s Bijoy Sarani areaaround 4:45am on Tuesday.

The deceased, Dr Akhter Jahan Rumpa, 28, wasan ophthalmologist who worked at an eye hospital in Sylhet’s Osmaninagar upazila.

Confirming the matter to the Dhaka Tribune, DMCH police outpost in-charge Sub-Inspector (SI) Bachchu Miah said: “The injured were rushed to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) where the on-duty doctors declared Rumpa dead—around 5:15am.”

He also said Rumpa’s friend, Dr Mohsin Faruk, identified the body while it was kept for autopsyat the DMCH morgue.

According to witnesses, a Green Line Paribahan bus coming from the opposite direction hit the auto rickshaw— overturning it before hitting it again.The impact left Rumpa and the driver critically injured.

A witness, Md Firoz, said the bus made a rapid escape after hitting the auto rickshaw; so it could not be impounded. Bidyut, the CNG auto rickshaw driver, is currently receiving treatment. 

According to Rumpa’s husband, she was in Dhaka for a job interview at an eye hospital in Dhanmondi.

“I was coming to Dhaka from Chittagong, and she came from Sylhet. We were supposed to meet on Tuesday, but alas, I only got to see her lifeless body,” he said, breaking down into tears.

Rumpa’s uncle Md Lutfur Rahman said: “Rumpa got married on May 5 of this year, but the wedding ceremony was supposed to take place next month.”

He also said a case had been filed regarding the incident, and demanded justice for the crime. 

Rumpa was the second of three siblings. Her body was taken to Chittagong by her husband and relatives on Tuesday evening.
