Abducted Jessore BNP leader’s body found in Buriganga River

The dead body of Abu Bakkar Abu, 60, was pulled out of Dhaka’s Buriganga River on Wednesday evening

Police has recovered Jessore BNP vice president’s body from the Buriganga River.

Deceased Abu Bakkar Abu, 60, was recovered on Wednesday evening from Dhaka’s Buriganga River, confirmed his nephew Ashiquzzaman on Thursday night. Abu was also the Majidpur Union Parishad chairman.

Ashiquzzaman said they identified the body from his clothes.

Abu was kidnapped a few days ago and the kidnappers already took Tk1.70 lakh from his family.

BNP Assistant Religious Affairs Secretary Amalendu Das Opu said: “We are at Mitford Hospital. We think its Abu’s body; the police are on their way with his photo. We will be fully sure once we get to see his picture.”

According to Jessore BNP sources, Abu went to Dhaka to collect a Jessore 6 nomination form for the 11th general election. On Sunday, he was abducted from in front of a hotel in the Bijoynagar area.

On Wednesday evening, a body was found from the South Keraniganj area of the Buriganga River.

Later on Thursday, Keraniganj police station gave a post on Facebook regarding the body, with a picture and description of a man lying on top of a boat, and gave two mobile numbers for information.

After the picture went online many people saw it and BNP leaders and activists of Jessore thought that it was Abu’s body. The news spread quickly in Jessore and Dhaka.

When asked, BNP Jessore District Secretary General Syed Saberul Haque Sabu said: “Abu was missing from Sunday or Monday, but we haven’t made sure whether the body found from the river is his.”

Abu held the post of Keshabpur upazila BNP for almost 22 years. He was unmarried.
