The incident took place at the new building of Dhaka Medical College Hospital on Thursday
President of Dhaka University (DU) Bangladesh Chhatra League unit Sonjit Chandra Das has been accused of allegedly assaulting a former central committee vice-president.
Ruhul Amin, the former vice-president of Bangladesh Chhatra League, was allegedly assaulted at the new building of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) around 12:40am on Thursday.
According to eyewitnesses, the incident took place when Ruhul, along with his elder brother Abdur Rahim- himself a former senior vice-president of Dhaka Metro North Chhatra League- tried to use the elevator in DMCH.
Ruhul and his brother came to DMCH to receive the body of Rahim's mother-in-law, who had died the previous day.
Around 12am, the two brothers were waiting for the elevator to go the eighth floor when Sonjit's elder brother and a number of his followers arrived there.
When the elevator reached maximum capacity as everyone tried to get in at the same time, Ruhul had asked some of Sonjit's followers to step out and take the next one, as he was in a hurry. However, declining the request, Sonjit's brother and followers started arguing with Ruhul.
Around 40 minutes after the incident, Sonjit and over a hundred his followers had come to DMCH and assaulted Ruhul, alleged Ruhul.
"I was dragged from the eighth floor to the first while being physically assaulted," he told reporters.
A former General Secretary of Chhatra League unit in Sir AF Rahman Hall in DU, Ruhul further claimed that Sonjit assaulted him after addressing him as a "Chhatra Shibir (the student wing of banned political party Jamaat-e-Islami) activist".
"It is shameful that Sonjit himself led the attack on me," Ruhul said. "I have been involved with Chhatra League's politics for quite some time. But they would not even let my brother take his mother-in-law's body from the hospital."
However, when asked about the matter, Sonjit denied the assault allegations.
"Ruhul had misbehaved with my elder brother," Sonjit said. "When I confronted him about it, he misbehaved with me as well.
"Later, I left the scene along with my followers as I did not want to hurt the emotions of Ruhul, who had just lost a relative," Sonjit said.
The Chhatra League leaders who were allegedly involved with the incident are- Mujahid and Solaiman from Sgt Zahurul Haq Hall, Maryam Sohan from Masterda Surya Sen Hall, Emon Khan Jibon from Salimullah Muslim Hall, Mehedi Hasan Shanto from Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall and Hredoy Hasan Shohag from Haji Md Mohsin Hall.
Meanwhile, General Secretary of Bangladesh Chhatra League Golam Rabbani told reporters that after coming to DMCH, he instructed Ruhul to file a written complaint.
"We condemn the attack," Rabbani said. "We asked Ruhul to lodge a written complaint. Organizational actions will be taken against the guilty party after investigations."
Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader has been informed about the issue, Rabbani said. "We will take actions after discussions with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, upon her return from New York."
Ruhul Amin was primarily treated in DMCH, and later taken to Central Hospital in the Green Road area of Dhaka. Afterwards, he was shifted to Reliance General and Renal Hospital on Thursday afternoon.
Ruhul's family is preparing to file a case against those allegedly involved. Ruhul was the general secretary of the Chhatra League unit of Sir AF Rahman Hall before he was promoted to the central committee.
