Call for support to overcome challenges to achieve SDGs

Speakers say private sectors play a crucial role in achieving SDGs 

Speakers at a roundtable have said, Bangladesh will be able to achieve sustainable development goals (SDGs) by 2030 but some challenges still remain.

The speakers said, since private sectors are playing a vital role in achieving the SDGs they need more support to overcome the challenges. 

Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) organized the roundtable titled “Potential Roles and Challenges of Private Sector to Achieve Sustainable Development Goals” at its auditorium in Motijheel on Thursday. 

DCCI President Abul Kasem Khan said Bangladesh has become successful in achieving millennium development goals (MDGs), but in achieving SDGs, the country needs to focus on employment generation and intuitional capacity building. 

He identified a number of challenges for achieving SDGs. 

The challenges are:

•    affordable and reliable energy sources, 

•    inadequate technology,

•    expensive compliance and preparedness measures, 

•    climate change impacts, outdated infrastructure facilities, 

•    high cost of doing business, 

•    weak regulatory framework including business process and,

•    lack of institutional capacity. 

The DCCI chief also came up with some more ideas including policy support programs such as tax break or incentives and subsidies; regulatory reforms in all major policies related to the economy, trade and investment plans; shared responsibility and partnership between public and private sectors; and participation of private sector in policy designing and programmings.

Abul Kalam Azad, principal coordinator (SDG affairs), Prime Minister’s Office, who was present at the event as a chief guest, said since Bangladesh has achieved MDGs it will be able to achieve SDG as well. 

He said Bangladesh has seen miracle development.

Azad said in order to achieve SDGs, challenges like resource mobilization, skill development and quality education needs to be overcome.
