Some faculties on leave, have been asked to join the departments within the next eight weeks

Dhaka University (DU) canceled two of its faculty members’ appointments since they had not joined at work by the definitive time after their vacation.

The faculties are Assistant Professor of Economics department Mashfiqur Rahman Khan and Lecturer of Development Studies Tamanna Afrin Rimi.

Along with that, some vacationers have been asked to join the departments within the next eight weeks. The decision was made at a syndicate meeting, Chaired by DU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr M Akhtaruzzaman on Monday.

The syndicate also cancelled a ‘controversial recommendation’ of selection board to recruit a teacher in Sociology department and appointed two instead of three.

The syndicate has dropped the appointment of SM Faizul Haque Ishan. His thesis supervisor was the Dean of Social Science faculty Professor Sadeka Halim. Other candidates urged allegations that the department deliberately tried to recruit Faizul Haque Ishan as a teacher.

Professor Dr. Anisuzzaman has been selected as convocation speaker for the university’s 51st convocation which will be held on October 6th.

Liberian Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Leymah Gbowee had been proposed to be invited as the chief guest for the event earlier on May 9th. Decisions have been made to confer an honorary Doctor of Laws degree to her at the ceremony.

Syndicate member and Associate Professor Mohammad Humayun Kabir confirmed the matters.
