A police officer has been killed after being run over by a bus in Dhaka’s Mirpur.

The incident took place near Rainkhola intersection, adjacent to Dhaka Commerce College, around 4:30pm on Sunday.

Sub-Inspector (SI) Uttam Kumar Sarkar, 33, of Rupnagar police station died on the spot after the Eagle Paribahan bus rear-ended his motorcycle there, said Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Assistant Commissioner (Pallabi Zone) Zakir Hossain.

He said the bus was impounded right after the incident and the driver detained.

Later, Rupnagar police Inspector Shah Md Aktaruzzaman Elias said the Eagle Paribahan bus was involved in a road accident at Mirpur Beribadh area several days ago. "The bus driver and his assistant had fled afterwards, leaving the bus there. Police later impounded it."

SI Uttam was bringing the bus to Rupnagar police station on Sunday afternoon with another driver at the wheel when the accident happened, he said.

Media reports said the detained bus driver, identified as Belal Hossain, 38, also works for Eagle Paribahan.
