'I think those who attacked us and obstructed our work should be considered criminals, regardless of their political identity'

Journalists yesterday demanded the immediate arrest, trial, and punishment of those who attacked journalists during the student protests for road safety.

The demands were voiced at a protest organized by journalists in front of the National Museum in Shahbagh, Dhaka.

Addressing the protest, Independent Television Assignment Editor Parvez Khan said: “We want those who attacked journalists to be brought to trial. Criminals are launching fresh attacks on journalists after being emboldened by the lack of trials.

“It is not important to us whether they (the attackers) are members of law enforcement or the activists of a political party. I think those who attacked us and obstructed our work should be considered as criminals, regardless of their political identity,” he added.

Parvez further said that while he wished for the attackers to be brought to justice as soon as possible, no one should be harassed during the search for the criminals.

Deepto Television Special Correspondent Bayazid Ahmed said: “Seven days have passed since the attack, but none of the attackers have been identified. I urge the prime minister and home minister to identify these criminals immediately.”

He also claimed that intelligence agencies knew who the attackers were, but there was a lack of willingness among law enforcement to find them.

Bangla Vision Senior Reporter SM Foyez, Maasranga Television Senior Reporter Zahed Selim, and Prothom Alo photographer Sajid Hossain were present at the protest, among others.
