Three DU students, who were detained by Chhatra League men and handed over to police Tuesday morning, were released later in the day

Three Dhaka University students, who were handed over to police after reportedly being beaten up by Bangladesh Chhatra League men for their Facebook posts, were released a few hours later.

The students are Tariqul Islam of the mathematics department, Mashiur Rahman Sadik of Information and Communication Technology Institute, and Zobaidul Haque Rony of the physics department. All of them are residents of Fazlul Huq Muslim Hall.

Sadik, who was one of the coordinators of a demonstration demanding cancellation of the affiliation of seven colleges with Dhaka University, was arrested in January.

Several Chhatra League activists, loyal to Fazlul Huq hall unit President Shahariar Siddique Shishim, reportedly beat them up early on Tuesday and handed them over to police for “spreading rumours” on Facebook regarding the student protests for safer roads.

They were released around 3:15pm in the face of student protests.

The students brought out a procession under the banner of “Students against Repression,” and took position in front of the proctor’s office.

Proctor AKM Golam Rabbani assured the protesters of taking steps to release the trio.

Shishim said: “The trio spread rumours on Facebook and we had the proof. They did not admit the fault. They however, admitted it after having been assaulted.”

After their release, the Dhaka Tribune asked Shishim to show evidence of their spreading rumours.

“I was not on the spot. I have to ask those who caught them red-handed,” he said.

On whether allegations against the trio were proven false or not, Shahbagh police station OC Abul Hasan said: “I am sorry brother, we released them.”

Earlier on Monday, two students – Sohail Ahmed Shuvo of Dhaka University's economics department and Morshed Halim of Dhaka College – were beaten up by unidentified assailants – allegedly members of Chhatra League – near the Palashi intersection in Dhaka.

The students, both of whom are activists of Bangladesh Student Union, are currently undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).
