At least three students of Dhaka University (DU) have been injured after the university bus carrying them lost control and collided with the iron net attached to the Mayor Hanif flyover at Chankharpool area on Wednesday.

The injured have been identified as Zawad of applied chemistry, Aminul Islam of Institute of Information and Technology and Ajijur Rahman of applied mathematics. They all were standing at the bus’s gate during the accident.

Jawad sustained head injuries and was admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, while the other two were given primary treatment.

Passengers said the bus named “Idrakpur” was crossing Mayor Hanif flyover when all of a sudden it lost its control and tilted to the left side and hit the iron fence.

When contacted, the university’s transport manager confirmed the incident and also said that the bus was overcrowded as protesters in the city had prevented the last two Idrakpur buses from coming to campus, and many students were hanging from the bus door.

When asked, DU Pro Vice-Chancellor (administration) Professor Muhammad Samad said they are looking into the matter to see whether there were any faults on the driver's side.

He also said the number of university student buses are insufficient and they are trying to solve the problem.
