Customs intelligence has detained two persons with 32 gold bars at the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka.
The two detainees are Hassan Mohammad Mohsin Chowdhury, a US Bangla Airlines passenger, and Md Arifuzzaman Palash, driver of the airlines’ VIP car.
Mohsin boarded as a business class passenger and landed in Dhaka on a flight that flew from Oman via Chittagong on Tuesday.
Customs House (Preventive) Deputy Commissioner Othello Chowdhury said the customs team that took position in different points of the airport following a tip off, intercepted the car carrying Mohsin and searched it.
They recovered the gold bars, wrapped with tape, in front of the driver’s seat and detained the passenger and the driver, he said.
The gold bars weighed in at 3.71 kg and are worth Tk1.86 crore.
Action is being taken under the Customs Act and Special Powers Act, the customs official added.
