Two suspected militants have been arrested from the Mugda and Tejgaon areas of Dhaka.

Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested Dr Richard Palash Bishwas and Sheikh Farid on Saturday.

Farid is accused in a case filed with Narayanganj’s Rupganj police station and Richard is accused in a separate case filed with the Bandar police station.

The elite force said Richard is a member of the banned militant outfit Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB), while Farid works for another banned militant group Ansar al-Islam.

RAB 11 Senior Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Alep Uddin said: “One of our teams conducted a raid in the Mugda area and arrested Farid around 10:30pm.

"He has a gold jewelry shop in Mugda. Many top militants frequented his shop.”

Senior ASP Alep also said: “On the basis of Farid’s information, we conducted another raid in Tejgaon and arrested Richard around 11:45pm.”

Alep added: “He is a doctor and had converted to Islam, from Christianity, after hearing Jasim Uddin Rahmani's [Ansarullah Bangla Team's spiritual leader’s] speeches. Later, he joined militancy.”

This official also said many militants visited Richard’s office and discussed their militant activities.
