Protesters say assaults cannot stop their movement

Quota reform protesters have again come under attack on the Dhaka University campus.

They were assaulted while trying to gather at the Shaheed Minar to organize a demonstration around 10:45am on Monday.

The attackers were Bangladesh Chhatra League leaders and activists, of Dhaka University and adjacent colleges, they alleged.

However, Chhatra League denied the allegations.

They said they took up positions on the campus to ensure a congenial atmosphere on the premises.

The protesters said a group of 15-20 Chhatra League leaders arrived at the Shaheed Minar, by motorcycle, as they were preparing to organize their prescheduled demonstration and flag procession.

The Chhatra League leaders assaulted Faruk Hossain, joint convener of Bangladesh Sadharan Chhatra Adhikar Sangrakkhan Parishad – a platform of the quota reform movement –  and whisked him away on a motorbike, one of the protesters said.

Lutfunnar Lina said the assailants also beat up the female protesters, and threatened to rape them, but nobody came to their rescue.

The protesters said the authorities, through Chhatra League activists, cannot stop their movement.

Meanwhile, quota reform protesters were assaulted, allegedly by Chhatra League activists, at Jahangirnagar University.

The protesters gathered in front of the central library of the campus, around 11am, to organise a demonstration.

But the program was foiled as the Chhatra League activists swooped on the protesters.

The protesters came under attack, allegedly by Chhatra League men, in Dhaka and Rajshahi, on Saturday and Sunday.

On Sunday, police arrested the quota reform movement platform’s Joint Convener Rashed Khan, in Dhaka’s Mirpur, in connection with a case filed under the ICT Act.
