A massive fire ravaged through the Dhaka Power Distribution Company (DPDC) Limited’s Dhanmondi 132/33/11KV GIS Sub-Station situated at the capital’s Kataban intersection Wednesday evening.

The fire started around 8:35pm and it took six fire-fighting units about an hour to put out the flames, both officials at the Fire Service and Civil Defence Control Room and our correspondent from the scene said.

No casualties were reported immediately, while the fire-fighters said they were yet to determine how the fire originated.

Since the fire, there was a blackout at Hatirpool, Paribagh, Dhaka University and adjacent areas.

A DPDC official said the station supplied power to Azimpur, New Market, Dhaka University and adjacent areas and before the fire broke out 140MW electricity was supplied on Wednesday.

He said they were working to resume the power supply within several hours.

The sub-station’s Chief Engineer ATM Zakir Hossain also told reporters at the scene that they have already formed a three-member committee to look into the fire and its source.

Officials said they were also yet to determine the extent of damage.
